WHY COMMUNITY SHARES?
The obvious answer is to help with fundraising but this type of share means much more than that:
The Community Shop/Café is registered as a limited company but is also a “Community Benefit Society”. This means any surplus profit must go back into our community.
Shareholders can elect the management committee and have a say in what the profits should be spent on.
The shares do not change in value or earn dividends and cannot be traded, but interest can be paid on them if the profits permit.
They can be cashed in at the discretion of the Management Committee, again if profits permit
Most importantly they demonstrate community commitment and help gain grants from other sources.
